Collaboration in the Flightdeck: Opportunities for Interaction Design
نویسندگان
چکیده
Computer applications are given increasingly complex functions to operate in multifaceted collaborative environments. The more capability and responsibility that is given to ‘computational agents’, the more we need to consider them as ‘collaborators’ in carrying out complex, shared tasks. In the aviation domain, for example, pilots are expected to monitor, anticipate and manage partially autonomous systems, which is increasingly problematic. Instead of designing such monitoring tasks, they should be considered as collaborative tasks and designed appropriately. We, as designers, are faced with the challenge of understanding and shaping such collaborative systems. This paper illustrates how the perspective of considering the interaction between the Flight Management System and the (pilot) user as a collaborative activity can uncover design opportunities – by conducting an analysis of interaction failures that contributed to the Cali air accident.

“Seeing” the Difference: The Importance of Visibility and Action as a Mark of “Authenticity” in Co-production; Comment on “Collaboration and Co-production of Knowledge in Healthcare: Opportunities and Challenges”
The Rycroft-Malone paper states that co-production relies on ‘authentic’ collaboration as a context for action. Our commentary supports and extends this assertion. We suggest that ‘authentic’ co-production involves processes where participants can ‘see’ the difference that they have made within the project and beyond. We provide examples including: the use of design in health projects which see...
متن کاملAddressing the Dilema Between Collaboration and Privacy in Coworking Spaces
This paper aims to inform design strategies for regulating privacy in coworking spaces. Coworking spaces are growing at a high rate, yet studies related to the social, psychological, behavioral and physical needs associated with these environments are limited. The growth of coworking spaces is in greater part facilitated by a drive towards greater interaction and collaboration among the workfor...
متن کاملMethodology for Estimation of Benefits of Human-factors Engineering in Nextgen/sesar Development
The concepts-of-operation proposed for Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) and Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) implicitly require a significant improvement over existing standards for flightdeck human-computer interaction. Whereas in today’s airspace operations there is no routing penalty for delayed response to a required maneuver, flights in high density NextGen/SESAR...
متن کاملA Safety Index and Method for Flightdeck Evaluation
If our goal is to improve safety through machine, interface, and training design, then we must define a metric of flightdeck safety that is usable in the design process. Current measures associated with our notions of "good" pilot performance and ultimate safety of flightdeck performance fail to provide an adequate index of safe flightdeck performance for design evaluation purposes. The goal of...
متن کاملCollaboration and Co-Production of Knowledge in Healthcare: Opportunities and Challenges
Over time there has been a shift, at least in the rhetoric, from a pipeline conceptualisation of knowledge implementation, to one that recognises the potential of more collaboration, co-productive approaches to knowledge production and use. In this editorial, which is grounded in our research and collective experience, we highlight both the potential and challenge with collaboration and co-prod...
